In Japan, where fear of rejection has led many to avoid dating entirely, which in turn has contributed to extreme decline in birth rates, we built something different: the NTT AI Dating Simulator for the Nintendo 3DS. Disguised as a familiar dating sim, it quietly rewired the experience—placing an AI-powered avatar between the user and a vast pool of real-life potential matches.
The Challenge
Japan faced a cultural crisis: fear of rejection and emotional risk led to a collapse in dating and record-low birth rates. Conventional dating apps failed to address the deeper psychological and social barriers.
The Insight
Ethnographic research revealed that emotional safety and narrative intimacy—not gamification—fostered connection. Dating sims, already trusted in Japanese culture, offered a familiar bridge to real-world relationships.
The Solution
We transformed the dating sim into an emotionally intelligent platform. An AI avatar learned user behaviors and gently nudged them toward compatible real-life matches—blending storytelling, shared media, and location-aware experiences on Nintendo 3DS.
NTT’s AI-powered dating sim blends virtual chemistry with real-world moments—guiding users through emotionally intelligent interactions that turn digital dates into real-life connections. Whether strolling through Shinjuku Gyoen or sharing coffee in Kita Sando, it transforms gameplay into something genuinely human.
Legacy
The pilot engaged 10,000 users, with 60% reporting increased confidence and 23% successfully matched with real-life partners. The project was later cited as the conceptual model for a 2024 government-backed AI dating initiative—marking it as a cultural and technological success in Japan’s evolving social landscape.

***DISCLAIMER: Originally the pilot program was built around the Nintendo 3DS XL due to it’s central roll in dating simulation at the time, also citing it’s web-connectivity, and the ability to hardware gate keep the initiative. However, due to timing limitations, it was decided to build the experience in a web app for mobile use.
